One Thing - Single

about

'One thing' was written in January 2014 after I dreamt up the chorus melody and lyrics one night. I excitedly got out of bed (not something that happens very often) and quickly went downstairs to grab my guitar and mini disc player. I then proceeded to pretty much croak the majority of song into that recording device and built upon what I had with the verses ('leaning through the balcony', 'it couldn't be the devil' etc.) until I had a complete song.
I felt at time that it sounded quite 'stadium rock' and was slightly embarrassed at this, returning later to have another listen.
On reflection, that is exactly the feel Steve Rodford and I have gone for with this recording. And It feels absolutely right.

It was first played Live with 'Nick and the Sun Machine' at the launch of my second album 'Wide Lying Smiles' on the 8th March 2014 (the first and only album with the band) The gig would prove to be absolutely crucial for me. Not because we were supporting Toploader and not even because I was even launching another album. It was crucial because this is the gig where I first got together with the love of my life, Kate Snowdon, a wonderful writer, journalist and absolute humanitarian who has been my rock (and biggest fan) ever since!

In other history, 'ONE THING' also made it to the final of the NATIONAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION in June 2015 and was part of my Memory Tape Playlist for BBC Radio 6 Music's Lauren Laverne in December 2015.

The song explores the two biggest and most universal of all themes, love and hate... but mainly love! It is at the absolute heart of what I do and foresaw my future, even before I knew what the heck I was writing about. I hope you enjoy this recording. And if you love it, SHARE IT!!

Cheers

One thing - Nick Stephenson

Chorus

One thing about love, you can’t lie to it, looks you up and down, it’s not a torturous crime

One thing about hate, we won’t learn from it, cause love is there any day, anyway all the time

Verse 1
I’m leaning through the balcony in a mood of near content; the vines keep creeping up the terrace to wrap around my neck
This pull is gravitational, I’m addicted to it’s force, I’m lost in admiration, I’m governed by these thoughts

Chorus

Ooo don’t run away, oo lie on the bed and stay
Ooo don’t run away, oo lie on the bed and stay

Verse 2
We’re stirring up this hatred, won’t someone change the tune or take a matchstick to these ways and finalise us soon. Wreck the park and fields, run naked through the flames, to the endless sweep that pulls us one step further from the rain

Verse 3
And I’ve got no inhibitions when staring at your eyes, there is no contradiction in their movement or their shine
It couldn’t be the devil, dragging me to hell
Impossible, as I know that’s what somebody wants to sell
Chorus X2
